5 Tips To Be More Engaged With Your Kids

As a work-from-home mom of two, balancing work, family time and all the duties that come with motherhood can be challenging. I also have increasingly found it harder to clearly define work-time and mom-time (which happens to be 24/7 time).  There are times that I have to balance the two roles, but there are other times when I need to be one on one with each role. Here are some tips on how to be more engaged with your kids and spend quality time by doing simple things.

5 Tips To Be More Engaged With Your KidsTurn anything with a power cord off – Step away from the computer, TV and ipad. Your kids will have ten times the fun actually playing with you rather than a game on the computer. You’ll be more engaged too. Just think, you could be making memories you’ll remember for a lifetime verses watching a tv show that will be forgot about in hours.

Put your phone away – unplug, unplug, unplug! Don’t think about Facebook, Instagram or Pinterest. Don’t worry about your text messages or unread emails. It will all be there waiting for you after you’ve spent real time with your kids. I have to remind myself of this too. I don’t want my daughter to feel like my phone or laptop are my most important possessions and when she sees me on them all the time, naturally this is the assumption.

Get outside – I know there are days when this isn’t possible, but even if its going outside for twenty minutes at a time, do it! There is just something amazing about getting outside into nature. It’s more memorable for kids. There is so many new things to see and explore and the kicker… you’ll more than likely be getting some great exercise time in for your kid!

Play a game – Games are a great way to stay engaged with your children. Whether it’s a made up game, duck-duck-goose, or Apples to Apples, games are great ways to spend quality time with your kids.

Be a kid again – Let loose. Don’t be afraid to sing to the top of your lungs or wear silly dress up clothes. Be silly. Crack your kids up. Make silly faces. It’s worth how ridiculous you will look for a few seconds to hear your children belly laugh. Be creative. Turn into a roaring dinosaur or a hoping bunny. Get your kids imaginations rolling and have fun!
